The Pinterest Challenge

I freaked out a little last week when Sherry announced the Fall Pinterest Challenge for today. With such a busy schedule lately, it put tackling something this past weekend out of the question. So I thought a little more about it and realized I had already been taking on a Pinterest challenge.

In the past few months, I have fallen in love with crocheting. It has become my new pastime once Noah goes to bed. Learning to crochet was a slow and bumpy road in the beginning but so rewarding once I got the hang of a few different stitches.

Lately, I have been working on crocheting earrings.

A few weeks ago I came across these beautiful earrings while searching for crochet patterns on Pinterest.

It had never occurred to me that earrings could be crocheted. The colors were absolutely beautiful! Immediately, I knew crocheting earrings was something I wanted to learn how to do. I had several questions though.

Where do I find patterns for crochet earrings?

A quick Google search for crochet earring patterns brought me to Moria Crochets’ website.

Moria loves to design and share crochet patterns. Her claim that the earrings would only take 30 minutes to make won me over. Unfortunately, I have yet to make a pair that quickly. The first pair took me around three hours to crochet. ML was kind and reminded me that it was my first pair and that I would improve over time. He was right! It only takes me around an hour to make a pair now.

Not too shabby.

What type of yarn and hook do I use?

Moria suggests using regular sewing thread, but after checking out a few other sites, I decided to go with DMC embroidery floss.

DMC embroidery floss is offered in hundreds of beautiful colors and is made from long staple Egyptian cotton. Another plus for the embroidery floss is the beautiful sheen it has. Three strands of floss are used together to crochet each beautiful pattern. The length of each skein divided into two groups of three is enough to make two pair of earrings.

Prior to crocheting earrings, I had been using a 4 mm hook. So switching to a 1 mm hook took a little bit of getting used to. Working with something so small definitely requires my glasses. For a while I felt like a needed the magnifying glasses that surgeons use sometimes. This stuff is tiny!

Would other people be as captivated with these earrings as I am?

With just a few texts, tweets, and Instagram (follow me @krystle_colortransformedfamily) updates, I knew that others were definitely captivated by the beauty of these earrings.

Could this be something I could make and sell to other people? How?

Yes, I want to use the money I make from the sale of these earrings to help cover travel and other expenses for our adoption as we journey towards bringing home our child from Colombia Hong Kong. Helping financially in small ways like this makes me feel like such a Proverbs 31 woman. So after thinking about it, praying, and talking to Michael Luke about it, I decided to open my own Etsy shop.

Meet Color Created Family!

Color Created Family is my shop showcasing my handcrafted crochet earrings with more types of jewelry to come. There are several different patterns and color selections, but I have plans to add lots more. Any style earring shown can be made in your desired color of DMC embroidery floss. Just send me a message requesting your specific color that you want, and I will create a custom order for you.

When naming my shop, I contemplated using Color Transformed Family as the shop name. Unfortunately/fortunately, that used more letters than Etsy allowed for a store name. So after some brainstorming, I decided on Color Created Family. I love it and hope you do too!

I value and appreciate everyone who stops by to read my ramblings week after week. As a small thank you, I want to offer you a discount. Use coupon code CTF10 when checking out to receive a 10% discount off of your purchase. I would love it if you would hop on over to Color Created Family and take a look around. Let me know what you think and what you would love to see more of. For your convenience there is an Etsy link under the Follow Me tab on the right hand side bar as well as a glimpse of some of the products offered further down on the side bar. Clicking on either will take you directly to my Etsy shop.

Thank you! Michael Luke’s mom said they reminded her of tatting also. They probably aren’t as intricate as tatting though but I love the lacy look of them.

How cute! I visited your shop: you have been busy! I had two sets of earrings like this that I got in Paraguay years ago, but I misplaced them over the years. I never thought of attempting to make my own…but mine would never look as good as yours!

Hi! Good luck on your adoption adventure! I was wondering if you have the pattern to the ones in your main picture that shows up before you even click the link. You have them shown in multiple colors and they are the ones that come to a point. I am obsessed with them and want to make a couple pair!
