DIY Knife Stand Block

One of the secrets to making a small kitchen look big is keeping the counter clean and clear of objects.  Doing this allows the eye to travel the full length of the counter without stopping.

I try to do this for the most part but sometimes your best use of storage is on the counter.  For instance with my knife block.  It’s a pretty bulky piece to store in the cabinets.  Plus, it’s incredibly convenient to have right next to the stove while cooking.

While I find myself knee deep in the middle of our kitchen transformation I keep looking for ways to simplify things and tie everything together with the yellow and grey color scheme we are working with.  I also like seeing the same color repeated throughout the room.  This design trick also keeps the eyes moving.  Which is one of the reasons I decided to give our knife block a little makeover.

I found the inspiration for this project a couple of months ago on Pinterest.

The project has been sitting on a back burner in my mind since then.  I decided to tackle it a few weeks ago while I had the Sherwin Williams Lemon Chiffon color still out from painting the walls in our kitchen.

First, I removed all the knives and cleaned the knife block with a damp rag. My block had a little metal plate screwed on the front.  I removed it and filled in the holes using Fast ‘n Final.

Next, I used a scrap piece of medium coarse sandpaper to scuff up the block a little bit.  This helps the paint adhere better.

Using the same paint that we used on our walls I applied two coats. Allowing ample time to dry between each coat.

(This is after just one coat of paint.)

Finally, to protect my little block from any abuse it may receive when “Chef Krystle” cooks I added two protective coats of Minwax Waterbased Polycrylic protective finish in Clear Gloss.  I had some leftover from when I painted the dresser in Noah’s room.

Not only does it protect the paint but it also gives it a nice glossy look.  Which I like!

(Oh, by the way!  Check out that grout job in the background.  Yay for ML!)

kitchenThis was a really easy project and an inexpensive way to update one of the accessories in my kitchen.  Over time I am hoping to add a few more yellow pieces here and there.  You know, to really tie the whole thing together.

In other news… painting of the kitchen cabinets has officially begun.  The whole process is taking a little bit longer than I originally anticipated but I am too excited about the transformation to complain.  I’ll keep you updated as it progresses.

Pair Your Child’s Artwork with Scripture

Paring your child’s artwork with scripture is super simple,
amazingly sweet and perfect for Mother’s Day.

Pair your child's artwork with scripture.

Back before Christmas, I took Noah to Barnes and Noble for story time. Every week after the story they get to do a little activity… usually color. This was her first story time and her first introduction to coloring. She was so cute! I wish I had taken pictures because she gets so serious when coloring. She holds the colors correctly, lays flat on her belly, and contemplates each stroke of the crayon. Even with the correct form though she was still a little unsure of what to do with the crayons so I helped her out a little bit and drew a heart on her paper so that she could see how this whole coloring  thing worked.

We ended up with this little piece of paper with random strokes of color and my heart. I absolutely love it and couldn’t bare to throw it away. I have been stashing it in my night stand, procrastinating framing it. Finally, as a little Mother’s Day happy to myself I decided to find a cute frame and showcase our little piece of art. frameyourchildsart_5I thought it would be cool to add a Bible verse to help me with my scripture memorization and to teach with Noah. At first, I tried to find a Bible verse relating to color or art but finally decided on Deuteronomy 6:5.

Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
strength.

Such a great reminder and an awesome commandment to share with your children. It was really easy to add to the artwork too. My first idea was to print out the scripture and apply it to Noah’s coloring but then I decided to write it directly on the sheet. Because my hand writing is less than stellar and can be hard to read I used Photoshop to layout where I wanted the verse. frameyourchildsart_2 Then I taped the artwork onto the computer screen and traced the verse with a fine tip Sharpie (Write Out Loud). It pretty much works like a lightbox.frameyourchildsart_3 frameyourchildsart_4Next, I popped it in the frame and called it a day. frameyourchildsart_5 Like I said earlier this was a super easy project but an excellent way to show off your children’s first (100th) artwork. I can’t help but think of it as a little happy for myself. Do you have any DIY projects planned for Mother’s Day? Can you believe Mother’s Day is almost here? I’m still in shock that it is already May!

Butterflies, Sparrows, and a Nest

Many of you know that in addition to sharing our DIY challenges and adventures here at Color Transformed Family I also have an Etsy shop, Color Created Family.

Pink Ombre Crochet Earrings

Color Created Family was born out of my love for crocheting and as a way for me to earn a little extra money to help us cover travel and other expenses as we journey towards bringing our little girl home from Hong Kong.  One thing I didn’t anticipate when I opened my own Etsy shop was how God would use it as a door for me meet other families that also have a passion for adoption.  It has been such a joy for me to partner with other families and help them raise money for their own adoption expenses.  Last month, God surprised me again by introducing me to the The Sparrow Fund and what they do to help others through the adoption process.  Color Created Family is donating 10% of our sales to The Sparrow Fund during the month of May.  So in addition to supporting our adoption process your purchase will also help support other families through their adoption process as well!  Kelly, the founder of The Sparrow Fund shares below how the idea of the The Sparrow Fund came to her and more about what they do.

The Sparrow Fund

Have you ever considered adopting? Simply looking at the stats, about a third of you have. About 30% of Americans have seriously considered adopting. Yet, only 2% have actually adopted. That means that of those who say they’ve seriously considered adopting, 14 out of 15 don’t ever do it.

Why not? Well, it’s daunting—the financial cost, the impact this child will have on your family, the unknowns…so many unknowns. It’s no easy thing. We get that, because it was daunting for us.

As we walked that road ourselves and alongside other families like ours, we saw a need. That 2% of families who were taking that leap of faith to bring a child into their family through adoption—they needed more support. So, we took the leap of faith ourselves to do whatever we could to do just that.

Two years ago, The Sparrow Fund was started to give grants to families specifically for the purpose of family support through programs around the country that provide preadoption support and counsel, on-call support for families while they travel across the world to meet their children and bring them home, and support once they are home to help both the parents, new son or daughter, and family as a whole become a family.

Recognizing more need, we added programs to encourage and support families from those waiting to meet their children to those who have been home for years. We’ve helped families learn about the unique needs of children who have been adopted in the classroom and how to use correction as a vehicle of connection with their children in a way that is sensitive to them and their histories. And, we offered a weekend retreat for couples to be reminded of their calling as parents and refreshed to continue serving their children.

We’re not interested in growing the number of families adopting; that’s not our focus. Rather, our focus is on pouring into that 2% who are adopting; we want to love and serve them and do whatever we can to make the daunting a little less daunting. And, maybe, just maybe, as the daunting becomes less daunting and the support available becomes more readily available, we’ll see more of those families who have seriously considered adopting say, “maybe we can do this afterall.”

There’s something special happening this month. A whole bunch of folks are now coming alongside of us, saying, “Yes, we support adoptive families and the work of The Sparrow Fund to pour into them. And, we want to help.” This May, in our third annual fundraiser, about 50 businesses have made a commitment to help us build the nest so that we can help others as they build their nests. In addition to event sponsors, these business partners have made the commitment to give 10% of their total sales during the month of May to The Sparrow Fund so that we can do what we do.

That’s where you come in. We need you to click HERE to see all the businesses and then we need you to shop purposefully. There’s really no better way to shop. Share the link with your friends. Let people know about this easy and fun way to help! Together, we can make that 10% something crazy big.

Forever changed by our experience of being adopted and adopting, Kelly Raudenbush is a stay-at-home mom/manager to 4 children and a professional juggler, juggling her calling as wife and mother with her secondary callings (editing and serving adoptive families through The Sparrow Fund). You can learn more about their adoption story, how they’ve been changed, and what life for them looks like on their personal blog, My Overthinking (where she’s going to have some super sweet giveaways this month, by the way).

Isn’t it awesome what Kelly is doing through The Sparrow Fund?  And what an easy way to support adoption.  Shop.  Shop for Mother’s Day, for yourself, the house… or just to show your support for adoption!

Thanks again for all your continued support and prayers for us during our adoption journey.  Right now we are still waiting to get immigration approval for our adoption from Hong Kong and then we will officially submit our dossier to Hong Kong for approval!  I’ll keep you posted as more develops.
