Pair Your Child’s Artwork with Scripture

Paring your child’s artwork with scripture is super simple,
amazingly sweet and perfect for Mother’s Day.

Pair your child's artwork with scripture.

Back before Christmas, I took Noah to Barnes and Noble for story time. Every week after the story they get to do a little activity… usually color. This was her first story time and her first introduction to coloring. She was so cute! I wish I had taken pictures because she gets so serious when coloring. She holds the colors correctly, lays flat on her belly, and contemplates each stroke of the crayon. Even with the correct form though she was still a little unsure of what to do with the crayons so I helped her out a little bit and drew a heart on her paper so that she could see how this whole coloring  thing worked.

We ended up with this little piece of paper with random strokes of color and my heart. I absolutely love it and couldn’t bare to throw it away. I have been stashing it in my night stand, procrastinating framing it. Finally, as a little Mother’s Day happy to myself I decided to find a cute frame and showcase our little piece of art. frameyourchildsart_5I thought it would be cool to add a Bible verse to help me with my scripture memorization and to teach with Noah. At first, I tried to find a Bible verse relating to color or art but finally decided on Deuteronomy 6:5.

Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
strength.

Such a great reminder and an awesome commandment to share with your children. It was really easy to add to the artwork too. My first idea was to print out the scripture and apply it to Noah’s coloring but then I decided to write it directly on the sheet. Because my hand writing is less than stellar and can be hard to read I used Photoshop to layout where I wanted the verse. frameyourchildsart_2 Then I taped the artwork onto the computer screen and traced the verse with a fine tip Sharpie (Write Out Loud). It pretty much works like a lightbox.frameyourchildsart_3 frameyourchildsart_4Next, I popped it in the frame and called it a day. frameyourchildsart_5 Like I said earlier this was a super easy project but an excellent way to show off your children’s first (100th) artwork. I can’t help but think of it as a little happy for myself. Do you have any DIY projects planned for Mother’s Day? Can you believe Mother’s Day is almost here? I’m still in shock that it is already May!

Christmas 2012: Glass Bead Ornament

Earlier this week I participated in a Secret Santa Cyber Ornament Swap.  Using the website Elfster we were assigned a name and spending limit ($20) and given a few days to make an ornament.  Our deadline was today so I haven’t received mine yet but I am looking forward to getting it in the mail.

Today, I thought I would share with you the glass bead ornament I made as my gift.  The end result is really very pretty but the best part is that it takes around ten minutes to make.

Supplies:

  • shatterproof ornaments
  • glass jewelry beads (or plastic if you want to cut costs), I used various sizes
  • hot glue

I used red ornaments in case any of the background happened to be peeping through after I glued on the beads.  To start with I applied a line of glue around the ornament.  Then I started placing beads around.

For this particular ornament I worked in rows and alternating colors.  You could use any pattern though.  I think it would look pretty one solid color with beads of random size glued all over.  It’s your ornament decorate it how you want to!I continued the banding around the ornament starting at the top and working my way down.  Once I made it to the center, I reversed the pattern and worked my way to the bottom of the ornament.  At this point the ornament was beginning to get a bit top heavy.  The weight of those beads really start to add up!

You can see in the picture above that a tiny bit of the background does show through.  So make sure whatever color ornament you use you don’t mind showing through.  Might not look so hot if an orange background was peeking through.

I took a small strip of yarn and tied it on as a hanger and then gave it a test drive hang on the tree.

Quick.  Easy. Beautiful.

Thats the way we roll around here.

I used the left over beads to decorate a few of the ornaments for the mantel.  I like this look too and think I might have to make some more like this for next year!

So there you have it.  A simple DIY glass bead ornament in under ten minutes (two if you use my simpler design above)!

The Pinterest Challenge

I freaked out a little last week when Sherry announced the Fall Pinterest Challenge for today. With such a busy schedule lately, it put tackling something this past weekend out of the question. So I thought a little more about it and realized I had already been taking on a Pinterest challenge.

In the past few months, I have fallen in love with crocheting. It has become my new pastime once Noah goes to bed. Learning to crochet was a slow and bumpy road in the beginning but so rewarding once I got the hang of a few different stitches.

Lately, I have been working on crocheting earrings.

A few weeks ago I came across these beautiful earrings while searching for crochet patterns on Pinterest.

It had never occurred to me that earrings could be crocheted. The colors were absolutely beautiful! Immediately, I knew crocheting earrings was something I wanted to learn how to do. I had several questions though.

Where do I find patterns for crochet earrings?

A quick Google search for crochet earring patterns brought me to Moria Crochets’ website.

Moria loves to design and share crochet patterns. Her claim that the earrings would only take 30 minutes to make won me over. Unfortunately, I have yet to make a pair that quickly. The first pair took me around three hours to crochet. ML was kind and reminded me that it was my first pair and that I would improve over time. He was right! It only takes me around an hour to make a pair now.

Not too shabby.

What type of yarn and hook do I use?

Moria suggests using regular sewing thread, but after checking out a few other sites, I decided to go with DMC embroidery floss.

DMC embroidery floss is offered in hundreds of beautiful colors and is made from long staple Egyptian cotton. Another plus for the embroidery floss is the beautiful sheen it has. Three strands of floss are used together to crochet each beautiful pattern. The length of each skein divided into two groups of three is enough to make two pair of earrings.

Prior to crocheting earrings, I had been using a 4 mm hook. So switching to a 1 mm hook took a little bit of getting used to. Working with something so small definitely requires my glasses. For a while I felt like a needed the magnifying glasses that surgeons use sometimes. This stuff is tiny!

Would other people be as captivated with these earrings as I am?

With just a few texts, tweets, and Instagram (follow me @krystle_colortransformedfamily) updates, I knew that others were definitely captivated by the beauty of these earrings.

Could this be something I could make and sell to other people? How?

Yes, I want to use the money I make from the sale of these earrings to help cover travel and other expenses for our adoption as we journey towards bringing home our child from Colombia Hong Kong. Helping financially in small ways like this makes me feel like such a Proverbs 31 woman. So after thinking about it, praying, and talking to Michael Luke about it, I decided to open my own Etsy shop.

Meet Color Created Family!

Color Created Family is my shop showcasing my handcrafted crochet earrings with more types of jewelry to come. There are several different patterns and color selections, but I have plans to add lots more. Any style earring shown can be made in your desired color of DMC embroidery floss. Just send me a message requesting your specific color that you want, and I will create a custom order for you.

When naming my shop, I contemplated using Color Transformed Family as the shop name. Unfortunately/fortunately, that used more letters than Etsy allowed for a store name. So after some brainstorming, I decided on Color Created Family. I love it and hope you do too!

I value and appreciate everyone who stops by to read my ramblings week after week. As a small thank you, I want to offer you a discount. Use coupon code CTF10 when checking out to receive a 10% discount off of your purchase. I would love it if you would hop on over to Color Created Family and take a look around. Let me know what you think and what you would love to see more of. For your convenience there is an Etsy link under the Follow Me tab on the right hand side bar as well as a glimpse of some of the products offered further down on the side bar. Clicking on either will take you directly to my Etsy shop.
