Fall Insomnia

The other night I just couldn’t fall asleep.   Which was really depressing because it had been a long day and I had been looking forward to it all night.  Don’t you just hate when that happens?

One of the reasons I couldn’t fall asleep was because my mind was busy running ninety to nothing brainstorming Fall decor ideas as well as a few other creative thoughts.  Since, I don’t have  anything to show for my thoughts yet I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane and look at what I did last year.

Fall Mantel

white pumpkins

I really loved all the height variations and color in this mantel set up.  There are several pieces here I plan to use again this year which I guess is one of the things making it a little difficult to get creative with it.  I’m up to the challenge though.  I’ve already started pulling pieces around the house that I think I might use.  Shopping around the house is the best way to go!  Sometimes you would be surprised at how much stuff you can find.

monogramed picture

According to Pinterest the picture above is the most popular shot of the mantel.  Pinners have really gone crazy over it and I appreciate all the love.  I have to give part of the credit to my sister though because she made the monogramed picture for us as a house warming gift.

Fall Door

I had so much fun making this monogramed “S” for our door last year.  I plan to use it again this year because it’s just too pretty not to.

My thinking is that since I won’t be spending money on the door decor itself I might purchase something for the landing area of our front door.  I’m thinking topiaries would look nice but we will just have to wait and see what I find a good deal on.

Fall Table

We didn’t really do a lot in the terms of “Fall Table” decor last year.  Some of it might have been because we were only weeks away from the arrival of our precious little girl, Noah.

soup, food

I did show a glimpse of it in this post where a shared a family favorite soup recipe.

Right now I am still in the dark as to how I want to decorate it.

I’m not sure if I will take advantage of it being a chalk board table top and draw something or layer it with lots of pretty fall garland, carnival glass, and pottery.  The layering affect is appealing to me right now but who knows where I will land in a week or two.

With all this planning and dreaming (not while sleeping) it looks like I am going to be as busy as a chipmunk preparing for the winter!  ML had to calm my desire the other night to fix soup every night for the next month!  Seriously, it’s one of my favorite things about cooler weather.  Do you have any special decor plans for the Fall?  Or find yourself resisting the urge to make soup nonstop?

Moss, Mums, and Twigs

My Fall decorating has spread from the mantel to the front door.  I have never decorated the front door for anything other than Christmas, so I had to start from scratch on my design.  I started by searching Pinterest for inspiration but didn’t find anything I wanted to use.

So I decided to go with an idea I originally thought about using for above the mantel.  The letter “S” for our last name covered in moss, mums, and twigs.

I liked this idea because it is different than the typical fall wreath but personalized because of the letter “S”.  I wanted to use vibrant colors… sometimes I feel our Fall decorations are a little more subdued, but nature really becomes vibrant in color during the Fall.  The orange and yellow pop against the green background.  I’ll go in to how I made it in another post.  I would love to now, but this week has just been crazy.  Hopefully, I’ll have some time this weekend to catch back up.  But I was happy to get all the supplies for under 20 bucks because of a great BOGO sale at Hobby Lobby.  Since I used artificial flowers, this is an arrangement that will be good from year to year.

I think it looks perfect on our door.  What do you think?  The “S” doesn’t seem to be too tall or wide.  Some people like an overstatement though.  So whatever works for you.

Here’s a shot from further out so you can see it on the entire door.  (You can also catch a glimpse of me in the reflection.  At least I wore a yellow shirt to match!)It adds a little Fall touch to the front of our house… and hopefully makes it look inviting too.  I don’t want our door screaming, “Back off!… Summer’s over and now I’m depressed.”

Like the mantel this Fall decor will also last thru November.  Isn’t it nice to get a couple of months out of your decorations?
